"An Introduction to Opera" combines a general discussion of the history of opera from 1600 to mid-19th century with detailed examination of key works, such as Monteverdi's "L'Orfeo," Handel's "Giulio Cesare," Mozart's "Don Giovanni," Beethoven's "Fidelio," and Verdi's "Otello." Students will have access to an online library of basic bibliographical sources and video recordings of the repertory discussed in class.
