First year PhD student in Political Science with cerebral palsy seeks pool of 10-12 advanced undergraduate, masters and/or doctoral students across Stanford University to assist with the typing of research papers and other assignments, as well as various administrative tasks (e.g. the sending of emails). Candidates must demonstrate moderate to advanced typing skills. Additionally, they must demonstrate patience in learning how to take dictation based on the PhD student’s explicit instructions, as the student has a moderate speech impediment. In addition to taking dictation for the student, candidates must be willing to read aloud any emails the student receives. They must also be able to read what they have written to the student upon his instructions. In some instances, student will also ask the individual to read portions of research material out loud. Candidates will further be expected to assist student with the formatting of research papers, including citations and bibliographies.

Although no explicit knowledge of political science is required, preference will be given to those candidates with a background in the field, both in terms of empirical methods and political theory. Candidates will be required to help the student type assignments in the following courses:
Political Science 333S: Marx
Political Science 420A: American Political Institutions
Political Science 432R: Selections in Modern Political Thought

For those candidates interested in typing student’s assignments for 420A, experience with calculus and statistics will be useful. This is not a requirement, however, and interested applicants should not be discouraged from applying due to a lack of background in mathematics.

Hourly Salary: $15 an hour for flexible but consistent weekly shifts: successful candidates will be able to negotiate number of hours per week with student.

Candidates will be required to fulfill required tasks within the PhD student’s office space in Encina West and/or his apartment in Munger Graduate Residence.

Although this advertisement focuses on positions for Fall Quarter 2013, successful candidates that wish to continue in the position(s) will have the opportunity to work with the doctoral student through the end of Summer Quarter 2014. For candidates who will be students beyond the 2013/14 academic year, the chance to continue in the position(s) will remain available in 2014/15 and subsequent academic years.

Interested candidates should contact Kevin Mintz at MintzKevin89@gmail.com or kmintz@stanford.edu. Please include “Application for Typist Position” in the subject line. Applicants can either attach a formal resume or write a brief description of their academic background. Student will respond to each applicant individually and schedule interviews for early September 2013.
