In the old days of China, each year different festivities were organized to invite the various deities to bestow belessings on to the village communities. The villageers painted face masks of those deities on various wooden untensils (spoons, rice measuring tools, ladles, bowls) and either wore them as necklaces or hung them inside their homes to ward off evil forces.
