We have an exciting opportunity for a Bioinformatics Specialist to join the research team in the Bergmann Lab at Stanford University.

In this role, the specialist will perform professional work in support of scientific research in computational biology and bioinformatics using technical knowledge of software, software development, networking, and/or hardware in a complex computing environment designed for scientific research. Working collaboratively with the Investigator, he or she will determine the most suitable computational methods to be used in research.

The ideal candidate will independently perform scientific investigative procedures requiring application of professional judgment and interpret experimental results and determine whether they are consistent with experimental goals. The specialist will also review pertinent literature for information that will further research goals and prepare reports of research for presentation or publication. This individual will have both broad and general knowledge in a number of areas and will have strong knowledge in a specific area of computing technology. Computer or network activity will represent over 75% of the activity associated with the work assigned.

This position may be offered at 50%, 75% or full time.

Principal Responsibilities:
Is specialized in bioinformatics and assists other researchers in the lab in data analysis (datasets can include genome wide sequencing, rna seq, image processing and such)
Help Lab members with data vizualisation (e.g., generate figures)
With minimal input from the individual’s supervisor, manage laboratory computer hardware and software. This includes maintenance of lab server, backup systems and imaging workstations.
If possible develops scripts to automate analytical procedures of imaging data
Test and review new equipment to ascertain if it would address needs
Resolve hardware, software, and/or network problems to insure adequate support to the lab
Train laboratory staff in use of hardware and software
In collaboration with other lab members, perform research projects as assigned by the Investigator

Preferred Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor of Science degree in science and computer technology or equivalent in education and experience AND one year of related research experience in computational biology and bioinformatics.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Technical proficiency and collaborative ability as well as independent thought.
In-depth knowledge of multiple areas and of the underlying principles and concepts.
In-depth understanding of complex equipment or processes. Can resolve most problems without assistance or defines assistance required for resolution.
Ability to develop innovative processes to achieve goals. Reviews work activities to determine where new information could improve processes or move projects forward.
Ability to initiate and compose communications for various purposes in an appropriate style.
Proficient in multiple operating systems.
Proficient in multiple software packages.
