The de Jesus Perez Lab(www.dejesusperezlabforph.com) in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Division of Medicine is seeking a full time Life Science Research Professional I to support the growth of our young and expanding lab. Our lab studies the Wnt signaling pathway and its involvement in the pathology of pulmonary arterial hypertension. We employ several different techniques to analyze protein and gene expression, protein-protein interactions, and protein localization and polarization in human patient samples and animal tissue. A successful candidate will be involved in multiple projects and may potentially be asked to lead a project under the direct supervision of the principal investigator. In addition to lab work the candidate will be expected to maintain a well-organized notebook, read and critically evaluate relevant literature, participate in discussion, and present their work both internally and externally.
Duties include:
Plan and perform experiments in support of research project goals, interpret and perform basic analysis of results, and present results
Maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes in a dedicated lab notebook
Troubleshoot unsuccessful experiments; offer suggestions/comments regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with other lab members
Review relevant literature on an ongoing basis
Help with general lab maintenance as needed
Help orient and train new staff or students
In the course of his/her job duties the candidate will gain experience in, but not limited to:
Cell culture; maintaining sterile cell culture, cell isolation from tissue, counting cells, freeze/thaw cells, manage cells for various in vitro assays
Protein biochemistry; western blot, qPCR, immunoprecipitation assays
Imaging; preparation, staining, and visualization of tissue and cell samples
Animal work; breeding, weaning, injection, dissection, hemodynamic measurements
Qualifications
Expected qualifications:
Prior experience in basic cell culture
Prior experience in animal handling and dissection
Knowledge of western blot, qPCR and other cellular/molecular biology techniques
Prior experience with use of light, epifluorescence and/or confocal microscopy.
Prior experience in preparation of tissues for histology and immunohistochemistry.
Has a Master’s degree in related scientific field
Education (required):
Bachelor’s degree in related scientific field
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (required):
General understand of scientific principles
General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications
Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance
Excellent organizational and documentary skills, demonstrating ability to accurately reproduce experiment results
Physical Requirements*:
Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, use fine manipulation, grasp lightly or forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write legibly by hand, lift, carry, push/pull objects weighing over 40 pounds
Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts
Rarely climb, scrub, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls
Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job
Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment
Position may require repetitive motion
