Females are often excluded from medical studies because of concerns that their periods will impact study results. While the effects of the menstrual cycle on the uterus are well understood, there is limited information on how the menstrual cycle affects other parts of the body.
Hormones vary during the menstrual cycle; we want to know how these hormones cause molecular changes in blood that circulates throughout the body. To do this, we will be taking blood samples (through a standard blood draw) at different time points in the menstrual cycle. This may help us understand how periods affect the immune system, disease, and drug and vaccination response.
