META is a smart materials and photonics company that specializes in nanofabrication, design, and manufacturing of highly-functional products that harness the power of light. Through applied physics and advanced design, we are pioneering a new class of multi-functional materials called metamaterials, which have engineered properties that go beyond what is found in nature.  META is headquartered in Halifax, Nova Scotia and has offices in London, England and Pleasanton, California.

About the role:

We offer an exciting opportunity to join our team in Pleasanton, California as a Photonics Research Scientist and contribute to our engineering efforts in developing functional nanostructured coatings fabricated using our patented Rolling Mask Lithography (RML®) equipment and process technology. This role will be supporting several programs including the design and development of ultra-lightweight high-reflectivity and low absorptivity nano-structured materials for next generation optical sensing devices and design of RF beam shaping reflectors for enhancing 5G communication systems.

 Key responsibilities:

• Computational design of metamaterial coatings with advanced optical, electrical and thermal functionalities.
• Design and fabrication of nanostructured optical films incorporating advanced AR and thermal coatings using RML.
• Development of optical and electrical characterization tools for high-throughput and large-scale characterization of fabricated structures.
• Assessment of large-scale fabrication feasibility using RML technology. This includes characterization in terms of their structural and optical properties, identification of fundamental limitations and limitations imposed by fabrication tools.
• Development of alternative designs and process recipes to enable large scale high-yield fabrication with minimum defect density and optimized uniformity.
• Assessment of reliability, stability, and robustness (thermal, environmental, mechanical) of fabricated films.

Required qualifications:

• PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering or relevant Applied Sciences
• US work authorization

Desired relevant experience:

• 5+ years of experience in the design and optimization of nanostructured optical systems using computational simulation tools and analytical models.
• Design and optimization of nanostructured optical systems using computational simulation tools and analytical models.
• Experience with FFT, FEM and FDTD Simulation tools, e.g. Lumerical, COMSOL, Sentaurus, RSOFT etc.
• Experience in advanced lithography tools and processes (ebeam, nanoimprint, phase mask lithography etc.).
• Semiconductor device physics and modelling.
• Optical and Electrical Characterization of thin film material systems.
• Fast technical and/or scientific document generation/modification.
• Self-motivated with the ability to align priorities in accordance with business goals and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Desired skills:

• Team player who enjoys working with different disciplines.
• High level of independence
• Effective oral and written communications skills
• Excellent technical and scientific writing skills
• Ownership and accountability
• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, self-motivated
• Ability to work effectively with cross-functional working groups, skill levels and expertise in a global environment
• Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
• Contribute to building a positive team spirit.
• Communicate effectively with all levels of employees.
• Always maintain the highest degree of honesty and integrity.
