META is a smart materials and photonics company that specializes in nanofabrication, design, and manufacturing of highly-functional products that harness the power of light. Through applied physics and advanced design, we are pioneering a new class of multi-functional materials called metamaterials, which have engineered properties that go beyond what is found in nature.  META is headquartered in Halifax, Nova Scotia and has offices in London, England and Pleasanton, California.

About the role:

We offer an exciting opportunity to join the US team as a Research Scientist and contribute to our engineering efforts in developing functional nanostructured coatings fabricated using proprietary Rolling Mask Lithography (RML®) equipment and process technology. This role will be supporting several programs, including development and fabrication of advanced nanostructured dielectric films for ultralight-weight solar cells and fabrication of novel transparent conductive films (Nanoweb) for transparent antenna and heater applications.

Primary task will be development and fabrication of advanced AR coatings and Nanoweb films using RML. There will be also a requirement (40-50%) for working in an outside nanofabrication facility to support the prototype development using standard lithography processes.

Key responsibilities are:

• Provide technical solutions for fabrication and characterization of complex nano and micro – structured devices under minimal direction.
• Plan and deliver timely solutions for fabrication, characterization and testing across multiple projects.
• Development of optical and electrical characterization tools for high-throughput and large-scale characterization of fabricated structures.
• Assessment of large-scale fabrication feasibility using RML technology. This includes characterization in terms of their structural and optical properties, identification of fundamental limitations and limitations imposed by fabrication tools.
• Development of alternative designs and process recipes to enable large scale high-yield fabrication with minimum defect density and optimized uniformity
• Assessment of reliability, stability, and robustness (thermal, environmental, mechanical) of fabricated films

Required qualifications:

• PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering or relevant Applied Sciences
• US work authorization

Desired relevant experience:

• 3+ years experience in advanced lithography tools and processes (ebeam lithography, phase mask lithography, holographic or interference lithography, soft lithography, nanoimprint lithography etc.)
• Optical and Electrical Characterization of thin film material systems
• Fast technical and/or scientific document generation/modification.
• Self-motivated with the ability to align priorities in accordance with business goals and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Design and optimization of nanostructured optical systems using computational simulation tools and analytical models

Desired skills:

• Team player who enjoys working with different disciplines.
• High level of independence on the job Effective oral and written communications skills, self-motivated
• Ownership and accountability
• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
• Ability to work effectively with cross-functional working groups, skill levels and expertise in a global environment
• Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
• Contribute to building a positive team spirit.
• Communicate effectively with all levels of employees.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
• Maintain the highest degree of honesty and integrity at all times.
