Culture Biosciences grows organisms for biotech companies. We've built the first cloud bioreactor facility. Here’s how it works:

1. Our customers, biotechnology companies, design organisms (bacteria, yeast, mammalian cells) to produce products (new materials, therapeutics & food).
2. We grow their cells in our bioreactors to optimize the yield of their products. Ultimately, we help our customers get their products to market faster.
3. Our customers receive their experimental results live on our website.

Our cloud bioreactor facility is made possible by custom software and automation technology that our team develops. The automated infrastructure is more efficient to operate than traditional equipment. Our software also provides quick and simple data analysis, enabling customers to analyze reams of data quickly.

Here's a video that explains the process.

The Role:

Lead the development of all custom electronic systems at Culture including our reactors, sensors and custom automation systems. This role might also be called an "Embedded Systems Engineer" -- we don't expect you to lead firmware development, but having some comfort there is a plus. You will develop and drive large parts of our roadmap, and you will work in close collaboration with other hardware and software engineers on our team.

What you'll do:

• Help define our hardware engineering culture
• Lead the electrical & embedded systems design of new bioreactors
• Conceptualize and design custom automation systems
• Learn about the world of biology and biomanufacturing

In return, we will support you by:

• Placing a high degree of trust in your ideas and execution
• Bringing you up to speed in the domain of biomanufacturing
• Providing a low-stress work environment
• Caring about you as a whole person, not a “resource”

Projects on our horizon

• Revamping the sensing/comms/compute package at the core of each of our reactors: designing and fabricating new boards, testing them and working with the team to get them installed in our next 100+ systems
• Collaborating with mechanical engineers to support the development of new bioreactor designs and sensing capabilities
• Developing new lab automation systems that improve the quality & efficiency of our operations

About you:

• You have at least 6 years of work experience designing, building, and testing electronics
• You’re proactive, a self-starter and enjoy thinking about the big picture
• You’re kind, curious, and enjoy learning new things
• You value communication and connection on a multidisciplinary team
• You care that you’re building something that solves a problem and helps our internal teams and our clients
• You are highly proficient in at least one EDA platform (e.g. Altium)
• You are comfortable working with PCBA groups
• You are familiar with best practices for mixed-signal design, EMI, and power supply design
• You are comfortable working with common embedded communication protocols (SPI, I2C, etc)
• You have experience working with various sensors and actuators
• You’re not a pure software engineer, but you’re able to write embedded software in C/C++, and you’re familiar working with git and CI/CD tools
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics or a related field. If you have a Ph.D., only 3 years of work experience are required to be eligible for this role.

Benefits include:

• Competitive salary and equity compensation
• Medical (PPO), Dental, Vision, and Life insurance
• 401(k) plan with company match
• Paid time off and 10 days of company holidays, including a winter break
• 12 weeks of parental leave at full salary
• Access to on-site child care facility, subject to availability
• Free onsite breakfast, lunch, snacks, coffee, and gym
• Support for relevant educational opportunities

Note: Culture Biosciences team members are working from home whenever possible as we do our part to slow the spread of COVID-19. As this changes and we can bring more staff back to the premises, this role will be full time on site in our South San Francisco office.

Culture Biosciences provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants. We seek to build a company that promotes inclusion and expands the diversity of our industry as a whole. We encourage people with identities underrepresented in biotech to apply.
