Mechanical Test Engineer I

El Segundo, CA | FULL-TIME

Cambium is seeking a Mechanical Test Engineer I to join our growing team in El Segundo, CA. The
successful candidate will be curious with a desire to learn, have a strong desire to help grow a company,
and will help us build a work culture of open-mindedness that embraces creativity and contrarian
thinking. At Cambium we’re willing to do things differently.

THE ROLE

Cambium is seeking an early career Mechanical Engineer to join our engineering team. You’ll work
closely with senior engineers to fabricate and test composite materials, analyze the data and draw
conclusions, and contribute to our growing team in many ways. This will be a hands-on role and you will
be involved in the entire process. We will provide training and mentorship every step of the way. As
Cambium experiences rapid growth, the responsibilities of this role are expected to evolve with a large
potential for career growth.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

● Fabrication of composite test coupons and parts. Learn the fundamentals of hand layup, resin
transfer molding, filament winding, etc. Contribute to process design development
● Learn how to correctly operate a loadframe (Instron) to conduct mechanical testing of composite
materials while paying careful attention to ensure you are following our test specifications. Analyze
data and draw conclusions.
● Onboard and manage technicians to carry out fabrication and testing tasks.
● Participate in a wide range of R&D problem-solving activities with an open mind and desire to learn
● Use what you’ve learned to create processing specifications for hand layup, resin transfer molding,
filament winding and/or automatic tape placement
● Write test plans and reports
● Design fixtures for sample preparation and testing. Use CAD to design and 3D print or otherwise
fabricate test fixtures and molds
● Perform engineering calculations and simulations to assess design performance, structural integrity,
and reliability.
● Communicate clearly and concisely key concepts, development status, performance outcomes, and
lessons learned to senior leadership, investors, and collaborators
● Collaborate across multiple teams including world-class experts in biomaterials, polymer science,
composites, advanced manufacturing methods, aerospace design, and defense products
● Create and contribute to the product demonstration and engineering teams in a manner consistent
with Cambium’s mission and values and the growth of Cambium’s business
● Provide regular progress reports to senior engineers and leadership

KEY REQUIREMENTS

● B.S. in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering or similar
● Knowledge of mechanics of materials
● You must be a self-starter, have a strong desire to learn, and be willing to work in a dynamic, hands-
on engineering role
● Due to the nature of the work, you must have US citizenship or US permanent residency
● Ability to complete tasks on time with little supervision
● Strong communication skills and collaborative spirit

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

● Experience with fiber-reinforced organic polymer composites
● Familiarity with aerospace structures and materials
● Proficiency in Python

Salary: $95,000 - $115,000
