Stanford University’s Division of Clinical Anatomy has an opening for a part-time/temporary Clinical Anatomy Lab Assistant.
This role will primarily assist with:
• Prepare cadavers and other anatomical specimens for use in anatomy courses.
• Participate in monthly specimen inventory checks and update records daily.
• Collect blood samples for serology testing of donated cadavers as required.
• Responsible for the setup, maintenance, and cleanup of cadavers and tools for all courses.
• Assist in the receiving, storage, preparation, and disposal of cadavers.
• Disarticulation and retrieval of bones
• Maintains upkeep of labs and classroom facilities.
• Lab staffing for core curriculum courses and test preparations.
• Ensure that stocks of chemical solutions, materials, and supplies are ordered and/or prepared as needed. Including teaching specimens and teaching materials, like human cadavers, prosections, anatomy models, computers, and dissection tools.
• Maintain/order, review expenditures of supplies, service, and chemicals, including maintenance of records pertaining to such purchases. Store chemicals safely; be aware of EH&S protocols and standard operating procedures for all chemicals.
• EHS air monitoring checks, fire safety checks, and improvement implementation.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
• This position requires a minimum of one year of Laboratory Assistant I level or a combination of education and relevant experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
• Ability to perform work with a minimum of error under general supervision.
• Ability to train others in aspects of Lab Assistant work.
• High School Diploma or equivalent required
• Experience with anatomic specimens, embalming process, preparation and handling of embalming solutions
• Safe operation of equipment, including but not limited to a perfusion apparatus, band saw, steam spray cleaning equipment, forklift, and various hand/dissection tools.
• Knowledge of blood borne pathogen safety precautions
• Requires ability to operate bone saw, hoist and vacuum pump
• Requires manual dexterity sufficient to perform the above characteristic duties
• Habits of cleanliness and neatness, and the ability to follow carefully detailed oral or written instructions
• Must be willing to work with cadavers
• Prefer Bachelor’s degree in anatomy, biology or biochemistry
CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:
• Desired Embalmer License
• Desired Funeral Director License
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Manual dexterity to perform assigned tasks.
• Write by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts.
• Frequently stand/walk, perform seated work, operate special machines
• Occasionally twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach /work above shoulders, light fine grasping.
• Lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 75 pounds.
• Rarely help move heavier items (e.g. chairs or lab equipment; packages of supplies; drums containing 2 to 15 gallons, depending on ability.
The role is fully onsite on the main campus in Palo Alto with a varying working schedule of Monday - Saturday between 6:30 am - 6:30 pm working 20-30 hours per week as needed. Hourly pay is $27/hour.
