POSITION SUMMARY:

Oversee the safe, efficient, and sustainable operation of the Cal Marine Fish Company’s (CMFC) three fishing vessels owned by Cape Fisheries Holdings (CFH). This critical role ensures a consistent supply of fresh, high-quality catches for our processing plant while maintaining the highest safety and compliance standards for our fleet.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT


• Collaborate with ship captains and crews to optimize catch volume, efficiency, and overall operational effectiveness.
• Develop and implement fishing plans based on quotas, weather patterns, market conditions, and processing plant needs.
• Work with the President of Cal Marine to coordinate fishing activities with processing schedules.
• Track vessel performance metrics and identify opportunities for improvement in cat rates, fuel consumption, and overall efficiency.

SAFETY AND COMPLIANCE

• Ensure vessels adhere to all applicable maritime and fishing regulations relevant to our target species.
• Conduct regular vessel inspections to assess seaworthiness, safety equipment and adherence to regulations.
• Oversee development and implementation of safety protocols for both vessels and crews, guaranteeing safe fishing practices.
• Investigate and report on marine incidents to implement corrective actions.
• Maintain all required vessel documentation, including fishing licenses, permits, safety certificates and maintenance records.

MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR

• Prepare vessels for maintenance schedules and implement schedule maintenance onboard all vessels.
• Develop and maintain inventory control system for all spare parts and equipment onshore and aboard each vessel.
• Provide approval for parts requisitions and machinery as needed.
• Advise management on all aspects of engineering related to the vessels.
• Provide technical reports designed to provide timely and accurate information regarding fleet maintenance, refit planning, and overall management.
• Liaise with Cape fisheries Holdings’ Director of Engineering to manage vessel maintenance and report needs.
• Coordinate vessel surveys, dry docking schedules, and ensure vessels are seaworthy.

CREW MANNING AND TRAINING

• Asist with crew recruitment efforts, proving input on candidate selection to ship captains.
• Collaborate with ship captains to ensure crew training programs are up-to-date and meet regulatory requirements.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIRED SKILLS OF THE POSITION:

• EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a Marine Superintendent or similar role in the fishing industry. Proven understanding of applicable maritime regulations and best practices for commercial fishing operations. Experience in vessel maintenance and repair management.
• COMMUNICATION: Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills with the ability to effectively manage and collaborate with various stakeholders.
• ANALYSIS AND DECISION MAKING: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on optimizing efficiency and catch yields. Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities and thrive in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
• PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to sit and stand for longer periods of time than normal; use hands to handle tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, crouch, and talk and hear. The employee must be able to move up to 50 pounds.
• WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment is a wet, plant environment with machinery in operation and temperatures often exceeding a comfortable level without protective equipment. There is time worked beyond business hours due to the seasonal fluctuations. When traveling the work environment changes and exposure to weather conditions and increased noise level are expected.
