I’m selling my beloved 2004 Volvo V70. It’s around 160k miles. Now, I drive it fine around the bay area and routinely drive it between Berkeley, HMB, and San Jose, but it’s been accumulating some issues over the years and I generally try to avoid driving it for more than 3hrs straight. Still, I think this could be a great option for someone looking for a cheap car to drive around the bay area. I am not aware of any engine problems, or any issues that would actually interfere with driving or safety in most cases. But here is a long list of minor things that I just haven’t felt the need to sort out, and probably don’t recommend spending the time or energy on except for maybe the first two:
- The low beams are a bit off. I’m not sure what it is exactly, but it doesn’t illuminate super well despite the bulbs clearly lighting up. I think they’re misaligned. This would be my fault, because I’ve replaced the bulbs a few times over the years and may have put them in kinda wrong. You may be able to fix it just by fiddling with them directly. As it is now, driving at night on streets without light requires some caution and I would try to avoid taking it on unknown highways at night, but I drive it fine in the city at night.
- The AC doesn’t work. My guess is that it just needs a refrigerant refill if you want to fix that. Heating still works.
- The passenger window does not roll down and the sunroof window does not open. I think the circuit is just failing somewhere and that this is probably simple for a mechanic-electrician, but I never looked into it.
- The key fob buttons do not lock/unlock the car. You can still do that using the key, or the locking button inside the driver’s door.
- Except that the passenger door only locks / unlocks by manually pushing / pulling the pin on the door. It’s probably the same underlying electrical cause as the window not rolling down. I literally just leave the car unlocked at all times and have never had a problem.
- I think there’s some oil leak. The oil level gradually goes down and you should replenish it every few months. I asked the guy at the oil shop once to check it out and he said it was very minor and not worth fixing.
- There is a small crack on the windshield from a pebble, which I did get treated at the time, so it’s safe to drive and doesn’t leak or anything.
- CD player doesn't work.
- Some other cosmetic blemishes around the car, but nothing major.
Otherwise, I think this is genuinely a great car and deal. I got it as a sophomore in the spring of 2019 and have had really great times with it.
I have done the timing belt + water pump replacement that you should do at around 120k miles, so no need to worry about that.
License plate was removed from the pictures with AI, so that's why it may look weird.
His name is Fjalar, after Karl’s horse in The Brothers Lionheart. I’ll give you a copy with the car.
