VOLUNTEER INFORMATION FOR CALIFORNIA'S LONGEST PARTY
THANKS FOR VOLUNTEERING (even at 2 am, OUCH!)
The 199-mile race is a relay with 12 runners per team. Through Organs 'R' Us, The Relay promotes donation. After running 3-8.9 miles, participants hand a baton to the next runner symbolizing the transfer of an organ from donor to recipient.
If any runner lives within 50 miles of the course, two volunteers, age 16 or older, must register online by April 10. On a first come basis, volunteers may choose a location (Start, 1-35, Finish). Failure to sign in and fulfill a 4-5 hour shift will result in disqualification of the volunteer's team. Volunteers may also participate without a team affiliation
WHAT VOLUNTEERS DO
1. Record rule violations on Exchange Records:
Instruct runners/spectators to remain off roads and away from Baton Exchange Areas.
Allow only Active Vans to park in Runner Exchanges.
Request quiet at night near residential areas.
2. Assist drivers into Exchanges to reduce vehicle congestion. If vehicles obstruct road shoulders, runners are forced into traffic.
3. Review final instructions with outgoing runners in Baton Exchange Areas. If possible, drive the course to the next Exchange and communicate problems.
4. Clean Exchanges and encourage participants to "Trash the Competition, Not the Course."
5. Accomplish all of the above safely and have fun!
