Hello, I am currently a graduate student at Stanford (through the Stanford Teacher Education Program). I teach 9th/10th grade English Language Learners (ELL) Algebra at Mission High School in San Francisco. My students are all recent immigrants and the majority of them speak Spanish or Chinese with very little English. I am writing to ask for help regarding a visit the 9th grade ELL students will take on Jan. 27th. Through a performing arts grant, the students are coming to Stanford to watch a performance. Before their performance, I hope to have my students go on a tour of the campus and after their lunch, I hope to have them hear a panel of current Stanford students.

The time slot for the tour is 10-10:45 am. On this tour, I hope to have current students show the students around campus. I would like my students to see important building on campus, resource centers, etc. Due to the language levels of my students, it would be preferable/highly desirable if a tour was given in english and spanish. The panel is from 1:15- 2:15 pm in CERAS 300. On this panel, I am hoping that my students can ask you questions about your path to college, what they need to do to go to college, and anything else they ask about.

I am asking for 2-3 volunteers for the tour and 4-5 volunteers for the panel. Since there will be about 35-40 students coming on the field trip, the more help I can have the better. I would like to highlight the importance of volunteers who can relate to my students in some way. This does not necessarily mean being an immigrant student, but this means having some kind of background to share with my students. It is important that my students believe college is a real possibility in their future. My students need role models in college and this is your opportunity to make a difference in their lives. Thank you.
